Accessibility

for everyone

Accessibility is one of mu-zee-um's pillars. Art is for everyone — so we want our website to work for everyone too, whether you use a mouse, only your keyboard, a screen reader, or enlarge the text.

We build this site to the international web accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1, level AA). That is the standard required by the European Accessibility Act. Accessibility is built into the site itself — not as a button or plug-in on top.

what we do

• Everything works with the keyboard alone — with a clearly visible focus outline so you always see where you are.
• At the top of every page there's a link that skips the navigation and jumps straight to the content.
• Images have a text description for people who can't see them.
• The page structure (headings, buttons, forms) is cleanly built so a screen reader reads everything correctly.
• Text and colours have enough contrast to be read comfortably.
• Form fields have real labels, and errors are shown in text — not by colour alone.
• If you prefer no motion, you automatically get a calm version without animations.
• The site works on any screen and you can zoom in without losing information.

what we're still working on

Accessibility is never entirely finished. This is on our list:

• Captions and text versions for our films, for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors.
• Audio description (spoken description) for visual material, for blind and partially sighted visitors.
• A welcome in Flemish Sign Language.
• Plain-language versions of the most important information.

This statement is reviewed regularly as the site keeps growing.
